Tim Nees Architect

About Contact

Tim Nees is one of New Zealand’s highly respected architects, and a Fellow of the NZ Institute of Architects.

I was ‘apprenticed’ to Ian Athfield at Athfield Architects in the 1980’s, before running my own practice, New Work Studio Architects, from 1993 to 2006. My work has now won twenty NZIA Awards for Excellence in Architecture, including the top National Award, and has been widely published in New Zealand and overseas.

I also established and directed a leading Wellington contemporary art gallery, Bartley Nees Gallery, throughout that time.

From 2007 – 2009 I shifted my focus to a commercial practice as an Associate Director and Head of Architecture.

However, at the end of 2009 I left that practice to resume my own much-awarded practice, and am now practicing as Tim Nees Architect. My most recent award, given last year, was for a house sited spectacularly above Wellington’s Evan’s Bay.

My studio practice has always emphasised collaborations, and I would like to acknowledge those people who made valuable contributions to the work – clients, partners and employees, consultants and contractors. I would particularly like to thank the following collaborators, many of whom now run their own successful practices: Justin Wright, Andrew Sexton, Uche Isichei, Ashley Cox, Rafe Maclean, Rodney Sampson, Earl Rutherford, Paki Maaka, Rachel Logie, Kris Hansen.
